New Travel Advisory for Canadians Heading to the Dominican Republic in 2026

Dreaming of Dominican beaches in 2026? Canada says go, but bring your headsmart along with your sunscreen.

As of the latest Canadian travel advisory, the Dominican Republic is rated at “Exercise a high degree of caution”—that’s beach vibes with a side of common-sense awareness. (Travel.gc.ca)

Until December 31, 2026, Canadians can enter the Dominican Republic for tourism purposes with a passport valid for the duration of their stay. If you are travelling for other purposes, you are required to have a passport valid for a minimum of 6 months after the date of arrival in the Dominican Republic.

Why the caution?

Canada’s travel advice points to crime risks throughout the country, especially outside secure resort zones. Pickpocketing, bag snatches and even violent crime occur not just in city streets but sometimes near airports, beaches and transportation hubs. (Travel.gc.ca)

It’s not a “don’t fly there” alert—but a “travel smart” one.

You’ll want to:

  • Stay in well-secured hotels or resorts instead of wandering unaccompanied at night. (Travel.gc.ca)
  • Keep valuables and electronics out of sight and locked up. (Travel.gc.ca)
  • Be extra vigilant near the Haiti border, where security conditions and service availability are unpredictable. (Travel.gc.ca)
  • Watch out for scams including ATM and card fraud and even aggressive local “fix-it” lawyers. (Travel.gc.ca)

By daylight, Punta Cana and the main resort areas still sparkle like the postcards—but at night and off the beaten path, common sense and situational awareness are your best travel companions. (Travel.gc.ca)

Entry tips for 2026

Good news for Canadians heading south: tourist visits don’t require a visa for stays up to 30 days, and passport validity rules are more flexible through 2026. You’ll usually need a passport valid only for the duration of your stay rather than the typical six months beyond. (Travel.gc.ca)

Don’t forget to complete your electronic entry form (E-ticket) before boarding—that’s your digital boarding pass into the DR’s customs system. (Travel.gc.ca)

Bottom line

The Dominican Republic remains a sun-soaked escape perfect for Canadians in 2026—but the updated advisory is a reminder that paradise is best enjoyed with your wits intact. Think sunscreen, situational awareness, and a healthy respect for your surroundings.

Safe travels are smart travels.
